Vessel types used during site assessment

During the site assessment phase of an offshore wind farm development, a variety of vessels are used to gather data on the potential site and conduct the various surveys and studies that are required. These vessels include:

  1. Meteorological and oceanographic vessels: These vessels are equipped with specialized equipment for measuring wind speeds, wave heights, and currents. They are typically equipped with masts, booms or towers, and anemometers, lidars, and other sensors to measure wind and waves.
  2. Geophysical and geotechnical survey vessels: These vessels are used to conduct surveys of the seabed and gather data on the soil and water conditions. They are typically equipped with sonar, sub-bottom profilers, and other geophysical instruments, as well as drilling and sampling equipment.
  3. Environmental survey vessels: These vessels are used to conduct surveys of the local wildlife and habitats, as well as water quality. They are typically equipped with cameras, sonar, and other instruments to gather data on the presence and behavior of marine life.
  4. Research vessels: These vessels are used for research and survey activities, they are equipped with scientific instrumentation and laboratory facilities. They are typically used for collecting samples of water, sediment, or biota, or for conducting experiments.
  5. Service/Supply vessels: These vessels are used to transport equipment and personnel to and from the wind farm site during the construction and operation phase. They are also used for maintenance and repair activities, and for transporting materials and supplies.

The choice of vessel depends on the specific survey or study that needs to be conducted, the equipment that is needed, and the conditions at the site. Many companies own or charter these vessels specifically for this purpose, while some companies also use more specialized vessels like Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) or Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) for survey activities.
